Bids sought for Schuylkill bridge work

Schuylkill Countycommissioners on Wednesday agreed to seek bidsto fix county bridge 42,on Orchard Road overPine Creek in Rush Township.

The work includes removing a parapet joint. Water had been leaking onto it, causing it to deteriorate.The job also involves what is called scour repair, fixing areas of the base where moving water has begun to cause erosion.The repair will include placing large rocks at the base to divert the flow. Also, the road over the bridge will be resurfaced.The two-lane, 60-foot long bridge was built in 1929. About 967 vehicles use it every day, and it has been designated as structurally deficient.Commissioners are also seeking bids for the same repairs on county bridge 125, on Kopp Road over Mahantongo Creek.The bids for both projects will be accepted in the controller's office until 3 p.m. Aug. 4. They will be opened at the commissioners' work session at 10 a.m. Aug. 7.Commissioners expect to choose contractors when they meet at 10 a.m. Aug. 13.In May, commissioners extended an agreement with Alfred Benesch & Co., Pottsville, for the company's work on the bridges. The contract was initially set to end June 30.In other matters, Wednesday, commissioners approved three one-year contracts for the county's Children & Youth Services agency:• Center for Arson Research, Lafayette Hill, for travel at a per unit rate of $0.52, arson evaluation at a per unit rate of $200.• DNA Diagnostic Center, Fairfield, Ohio, for paternity/maternity test at a per unit rate of $50, standard trio test at a per unit rate of $250, and mitochondrial DNA test at a per unit rate of $600.• Signature Family Services, West Reading, for training at a per unit rate of $15, administrative fee at a per unit rate of $25, and intensive casework counseling at a per unit rate of $58.They also approved a $456,450, three-year contract with Frank Malocu, doing business as Golden Years Adult Center, Shenandoah, for the Office of Senior Services.The contract includes an option to renew for up to five years.
