6 injured in deck collapse

A children's birthday party Tuesday quickly turned into a nightmare as the deck where a Carbon County family was celebrating collapsed beneath them.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m., at a residence at the intersection of Doolittle Mews and Towamensing Trail in the Towamensing Trails development of Penn Forest Township, emergency crews responded to calls of a structure collapse and people injured.Mark Nalesnik, Carbon County Emergency Management Agency director, said six people were taken to various hospitals, including Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest and Gnaden Huetten Memorial. The people have not been identified and their conditions are unknown. Those injured included children and adults.Four were flown by Medevac and PennSTAR, while two were transported by White Haven and Lehighton ambulances for injuries ranging from broken bones to head injuries.Nalesnik said that emergency crews from Albrightsville, Penn Forest Township and Monroe County worked carefully to rescue the people, who were trapped under the collapsed deck."It was a serious incident," Nalesnik said, noting that it was good that none of the responders got hurt during the rescue."They had to rescue these patients that were trapped under the rubble, and they had to do it so they didn't cause further injury to them," Nalesnik said.Nalesnik added that he did not have any official word on what caused the deck to collapse.
