Schuylkill man dies in fire

A Schuylkill County man died in a fire early Sunday.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said the body of Richard T. Dermo, 65, of 33 S. Maple Ave., in Cass Township, was found inside his home.According to troopers, fire companies were dispatched at 2:41 a.m. to a working structure fire at 33-35 S. Maple Ave. with entrapment. When firemen arrived on scene, they were met with heavy flames coming from 33 S. Maple Ave. Firefighters were unable to make entry to Dermo's home due to the heavy fire.Dermo's neighbor, Edward J. Drasdis, 50, of 35 S. Maple Ave., was awakened by smoke detectors in his home and was able to make it to safety.Coroner David Moylan III said the victim had "extensive thermal injuries" but that "some significant cardiac disease" may have contributed to his death.The fire is still under investigation by a state police fire marshal and the Schuylkill County coroner's office.The Associated Presscontributed to this report.
