Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met June 24 at the home of Helen Moyer. A number of special guests from the Schuylkill Garden Club were in attendance.During the business session, the group discussed the upcoming Schuylkill County Fair, then toured Moyer's gardens, which feature a number of unusual flowers and shrubs.The next meeting will be held July 22 at Leiby's Grove. Hot dogs will be provided. Members are to bring a covered dish, dinnerware and beverages.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met June 26 with 56 members and one guest, Rita Thompson, in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session. Norma Lee Burke provided the invocation, "Gold Years of Love."Members voted to make a donation to Trinity United Church of Christ in memory of Jayne Myers and to purchase new equipment for the bingo machineThe meeting concluded with cards and social games.Due to the July 4 holiday, the next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on July 10, at the Masonic Lodge, located on Route 54 (east) in Hometown.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.Honor societyThe name of Kailyn Erbe was inadvertently omitted from the list of Tamaqua Area Middle School students inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.Summer concertsThe next event in the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce's Summer Concert Series will be July 3 and will feature Frasier Thomas (acoustic jazz, blues and pop). Concerts are held from 6 to 8 p.m., on select Thursdays, on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station throughout the summer season.Other scheduled concerts include: July 10, Carol Tempest (oldies); July 17, Shannon Miedaner Marsyada (acoustic classic rock and blues); July 24, Gene Morrison Family and Friends (oldies and folk); July 31, Christopher Dean Band (rhythm and blues); Aug. 7, Todd Wolfe Band (classic rock, "bluesadelic"); Aug. 21, BC Combo (blues); Aug. 28, Coal County Express (bluegrass); and Sept. 4, Fred Douglas (oldies).For more information, contact the chamber at 570-668-1880 or email

The next meeting is July 9.Soup socialMonthly soup socials are held at Trinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St. The next outreach social will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on July 5. The free event is part of Trinity's monthly "Feeding the Hungry" program.Those attending are reminded to use the lower parking lot entrance into Founder's Hall.
