Missing girl, 10, located through Facebook post Summit Hill search has happy outcome

The extensive search for a missing 10-year-old girl in Summit Hill on Tuesday had a happy ending.

The girl was missing for three hours. Her photo was posted on Facebook and the public quickly jumped in to share the word of her disappearance. The Times News site was one of the locations where her photo was placed. It worked.A couple saw the girl's photo and read her description on the social media site. As they were driving, they spotted her leaning against a car.She was only a block from where the command center was set up for the search. The child, Brandi Barbera, had been in placed in foster care in Summit Hill just three weeks ago.Her foster father, Steve Stone, said that at about 11 a.m., she got angry and left the residence.Stone was concerned because she didn't know the area, which is surrounded by heavy woods and contains dangerous mine pits.He called 911 and requested help to locate her.The Summit Hill Fire Department, Lansford Fire Department, fire police from the two communities, the Carbon County Emergency Management Agency and Summit Hill police, all came to help with the search. The Northeast Search and Rescue brought search dogs to the site.Local residents, including some on all-terrain vehicles, also participated in the search.Volunteers searched paths in the dense woods and conducted a physical search of surrounding neighborhoods, looking into garages and other buildings, and drove around town hoping to spot her.The command center, headed by Ed Nunemacher, captain of the Summit Hill fire police, was set up in the parking lot of Hiles Brothers Plumbing, Heating and Fuel Oil.Nunemacher said officials were concerned because her medications could result in dehydration from the humid, upper-80 degree weather conditions. At about 2 p.m., Timothy and Heather Heffelfinger left their home. Their son is a member of the Summit Hill Fire Department and was part of the search team. The Heffelfingers saw the description on Facebook before leaving their home.At the corner of Fell and Pine streets, a block from their house and a block from the Hiles site, they saw the young girl standing alone, leaning on a car.She was in good health and was not injured.Bruce Barton, chief of Northeast Search and Rescue, said he brought about six members of his squad and several specially trained search dogs. The girl was found before his team got started.Barton said, "We didn't do much today but I'm very glad this had a happy ending. Too often it doesn't."Mark Nalesnik, Carbon County Emergency Management Coordinator, added, "It's great that we have so many people in our area who care and got involved to search for this girl," he said.
