Man who was high in court arrested again

A Lansford man who showed up high to a Carbon County Court hearing last week was arrested on Monday on new drug charges.

William D. Barnes, 36, of 237 W. Patterson St., was charged by the state Office of the Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics with operating a meth lab, illegally dumping meth waste, and possessing what are called "precursor" chemicals, those used to make meth.He was arraigned before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford, and jailed under $75,000 straight cash bail.Barnes, who is unemployed, was on probation on a Carbon County drug charge, and out on bail on a Schuylkill County robbery charge when he was arrested at about noon Monday.Barnes admitted to making meth in the house for about two weeks, and that he had helped others make the drug in the area for the past year. Barnes told authorities he got rid of the meth waste by putting it in the trash.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by state narcotics agent Charles Horvath, here's what happened:A search warrant was served at Barnes' house, where he lives with his mother and his young child, of whom his mother has custody. The state police Clandestine Laboratory Response Team was called to the house, and seized a number of items, including a plastic bottle containing suspected meth residue; two plastic bottles suspected to be acid gas generators; strips of lithium; a box of instant cold pack, a can of naphtha; and vinyl tubing.Barnes admitted to the misdeeds after waiving his Miranda rights. After his arraignment, Barnes, manacled, stood on the porch of Kosciolek's office, lit a cigarette and called his mother."Mom? I'm sorry about everything. I'm going to jail," he said.In April, police were looking for Barnes after he heaved a concrete flower pot at the window of Marco's Pizza in Lansford in the wee hours of Jan. 28. He had been charged with criminal attempt, loitering or prowling at night, disorderly conduct, trespassing and public drunkenness. A charge of criminal mischief is also expected to be filed. But after being released on $10,000 bail, Barnes vanished. When he finally came before Carbon County Court Judge Joseph J. Matika on June 24, he was visibly high on methamphetamine, oxycodone and other drugs.Matika sent Barnes back to jail to sober up. On June 26, he pleaded guilty to trespass, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. The judge sentenced him to six months' probation on the conduct charge, and fined him $50 each on the other charges. He also ordered Barnes to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, perform 50 hours of community service and stay away from Marco's.Barnes was out on $500 bail in the Schuylkill case, in which he was charged on April 15 by Coaldale officer Keith Krapf with robbery, breaking into a structure and simple assault. He was set free on May 9 after posting $50.
