Lansford Legion raises money for homeless vets

The Legion Riders of American Legion Post 123 in Lansford held their third annual Bike Night on Saturday.

Vendors lined the streets at 10:30 a.m., serving an assortment of food and drinks to the bikers before their departure at noon.Joe Butrie, president of the Legion Riders, said that last year's Bike Night was a success, and they planned this year's event with hopes to grow from there."We were new at it, but it's been growing every year. We figured out what worked and what didn't work," he said.Butrie led the group of about 25 riders on a 45-mile drive along the back roads of the area, including Lewistown Valley. In addition to food, vendors offered body jewelry, housewares, door prizes and T-shirts.Also included was a dunk tank, where Butrie willingly got inside, still dressed in his biker gear, minus the boots.A local band, Senile Delinquents, performed, as did DJ Nick. For some, the event may just look like a lot of boots and leather, but for the riders, it means much more. While every Lansford Bike Night benefits those who serve our country, all proceeds for this year were raised for homeless veterans.Butrie said, "We're doing this for the veterans. We should not have homeless veterans in this country."David Weaver, of Coaldale, has come to the bike night for the past three years to support the cause."It's what little we can do for them. If it helps two people, it's worth it," he said.
