$500 received for bleachers

Nearly all of the topics of discussion at Slatington's June 23 committee workshop meeting were presented by Robert Stettner, chairman of the Slatington Parks and Recreation Commission.

First, Stettner said a $500 grant had been received from the Slatington Rotary for bleachers at the West End Playground and that he had gotten three estimates on aluminum ones.He later said there have been no bleachers at the park since they were removed two years ago because that set had not been up to code.Public Safety Chairman Jon Rinker suggested the bleachers be secured so that they could not be moved. Human/community services Chairman Dave Schnaars agreed that securing them to the ground was a good idea.Council placed the item on its agenda to be acted upon during its regular meeting in July.Stettner brought up August's annual 5K Run at the Slatington Trailhead, noting that this year's course has been altered to run solely along the Slate Heritage Trail and that its usual date of the third Saturday of August has been switched this year to the second Saturday, Aug. 9, to coincide with the opening ceremonies of Slatington's 150th anniversary celebrations.Stettner asked for an estimate of when someone would be able to look at an ongoing water leak at the Walnut Street playground's refreshment stand that is causing issues with both the refreshment area and the restrooms.Schnaars asked him to submit a work order and said, "We'll have to follow up on that."It was noted that two quotes were received for roof repairs, including one from Patrice Hunsicker of Mint Construction of Walnutport, who presented to council a quote for the three roofs: at borough hall, at the Vigilant Fire Company and at the old firehouse on Main Street.Council approved putting the issue on the agenda for its next meeting. This was the first meeting of the borough council during which newly appointed Councilwoman Amanda Trelease took part.Trelease was appointed at a special council meeting on June 16 to fill the vacancy left by former President Daniel Stevens, who resigned his position effective June 1.But though Trelease had been allowed to swear in that night, she had needed a notarized affidavit confirming her residency before she could actually take her seat on council.
