Just in time for our nation's birthday, Sunny Rest Resort in Palmerton hosts its third annual "Bare Beach Beer Bash," birthday suit required.
Although the event is on year number three, large-scale news corporations have caught wind of the clothing-prohibited fest, giving the resort more exposure than they're used to.According to Halsie Shoemaker, resort manager, she has been receiving calls from ABC News, Fox News, Huffington Post and others."It's definitely because it's a nudist beer festival," Shoemaker said. "I really don't know of any others where nudity is required."It's a mystery as to why Sunny Rest has made headlines this year in particular, but the resort is thankful for the publicity, hoping for a good turnout this weekend.Shoemaker said, "We advertised on Facebook, and then it went viral. I guess the media picked it up, and it was starting to be advertised everywhere."Much of the coverage has media trying to wrap their heads around the idea. Carly Ledbetter of the Huffington Posts asked, "Is this better than college?"Genevieve Shaw Brown, via Good Morning America, said, "At this beer festival, the nudity comes before you've even had your first drink."Jokes aside, news of the event has not brought any negative attention to the resort. Shoemaker said that the community has always respected Sunny Rest. The festival, offering an assortment of craft beers, games and entertainment, takes place Saturday.
