Pleasant Valley increases daily substitute rate to $100

The Pleasant Valley School Board has voted to approve raising the substitute teacher rate from $80 a day to $100 a day.

Then board voted 7-1 last week, with Susan Kresg casting the dissenting vote. Board member Robert Serfass was absent.Kresge said that she approves of a raise, but not $100."Once you go to that rate, you can't reduce it," she said.Board member Len Peeters said that he was for the raise. He thinks the $100 will pull in the substitutes. The debate whether or not to increase the substitute teacher raise has been ongoing since the board heard that several PV specialist teachers were being pulled in to act as substitute teachers because of the lack of substitutes.Earlier this year Superintendent Carole Geary introduced a survey of substitute teacher rates throughout the Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 districts, which varied from $70 in Pen Argyl to $100 at Pocono Mountain. The board also approved, 8-0, to recall two furloughed teachers, Yvette Shelter for Pleasant Valley Intermediate sixth grade Social Studies and Tim Hinton for PVI sixth grade Special Education, first semester. The board approved, 8-0:• A contract with Mobile Ag.
