Our Lady of the Angels Academy, Lansford, honored 10 eighth-grade students during baccalaureate Mass and a graduation ceremony on June 9, at St. Joseph's Church, Summit Hill.

The Rev. Francis Schoenauer was the presider; the Rev. Kenneth Medve served as homilist; and the Rev. James Burdess distributed the awards.The following students received diplomas: Scott Faust, Joshua Jurick, Syngen Lucas, Michael McLaughlin Jr., Gage Rivers, Brayden Webb, Erica Baba, Isabella Blasko, Alexus Eschbach and Julia Hoben.Awards for Excellence in the major subject areas were given to religion, Alexus Eschbach; mathematics, Michael McLaughlin; science, Syngen Lucas; language arts, Julia Hoben; social studies, Joshua Jurick; literature; and reading, Erica Baba.An award for scholarship for the highest general average in the eighth-grade class was presented to Julia Hoben.An award for scholarship for the second highest general average in the eighth-grade class was presented to Joshua Jurick.The President's Education Awards Program was initiated in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan to recognize the nation's students for their outstanding academic performance and achievements.Each recipient of the President's Award for Educational Excellence must have earned a grade-point average of 90 on a 100 point scale through grades six and seven, and during the first semester of grade eight and a high achievement on a standardized test battery score in math or reading.The following graduating students have met these criteria and are awarded the President's Award for Academic Excellence: Joshua Jurick, Syngen Lucas, Michael McLaughlin, Erica Baba, Alexus Eschbach and Julia Hoben.Other awards presented were:Principal's Award: Scott Faust.Diocese of Allentown Bishop's Scholarship: Joshua Jurick, Michael McLaughlin, Erica Baba, Isabella Blasko and Julia Hoben.Connell McCall Memorial Grant: Alexus Eschbach.Paul J. Nester, Jr. Scholarship: Julia Hoben.The Margaret Shober Scholarship: Erica Baba.Mr. Benjamin Davis Memorial Award: Scott Faust.IHM Math Contest certificates were awarded to: Syngen Lucas, first place; Joshua Jurick, second place; and Julia Hoben, third place.The Home and School Association presented each graduate with a rosary and CYO gave each graduate a Class of 2014 shirt as a graduation gift.
