Camp begins at Memorial Park in Jim Thorpe

The Jim Thorpe Summer Recreation Program began on Monday in Memorial Park in Jim Thorpe.

According to Randall Smith, who organizes the camp, about 60 children registered on the first day.He hopes to have 100 children register overall.The day camp is for Jim Thorpe Area School District children from second through sixth grade. The camp will end on Aug. 12, and there will be no program on July 3, 4 or 7.All children must register at the camp with a parent, one time only, and must sign in and out daily.The morning session is from 9 a.m. until noon and the afternoon session is from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.Children attending all day must bring a lunch.Each Wednesday, there will be a trip to Mauch Chunk Lake Park., and campers will take a bus departing from Memorial Park at 10 a.m.All activities, including arts, crafts, sports and games, are offered at no cost, and campers may attend any or all sessions.Even on rainy days, the camp plans activities under the pavilion, such as arts, crafts, board games and more.The Jim Thorpe Rotary Club is the coordinating organization in the camp's 18th consecutive year of serving the children in the Jim Thorpe area.
