Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met June 10 at the home of John and Joan Nortavage with 13 members in attendance.Following the business session, the group enjoyed a tour of the Nortavage's personally planned and created gardens.The next meeting will be held at the home of Helen Moyer and will include a tour of the gardens.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met June 19 with 62 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session. Norma Lee Burke provided the invocation, "The Summer Day."Pearl Davis, Leona Machay, Jayne Myers and Nora Scheidy were added to the sick list.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.Due to the July 4 holiday, the next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on July 10, at the Masonic Lodge, located on Route 54 (east) in Hometown. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.Movies in the parkTh East End Playground Association continues its Summer "Movies in the Park" program this Thursday with a presentation of the classic "E.T. The Extraterrestrial." The movie will begin at 8:30 p.m., while the concession stand will open at 7:30 p.m.Bring a blanket or a lawn chair as seating is extremely limited.Summer concertsThe next event in the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce's Summer Concert Series will be held June 26 and will feature Livie and Shane (acoustic folk).The concerts are held from 6 to 8 p.m., on select Thursdays, on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station throughout the summer season.Other scheduled concerts include: July 3, Fraser Thomas (acoustic jazz, blues and pop); July 10, Carol Tempest (oldies); July 17, Shannon Miedaner Marsyada (acoustic classic rock and blues); July 24, Gene Morrison Family and Friends (oldies and folk); July 31, Christopher Dean Band (rhythm and blues); Aug. 7, Todd Wolfe Band (classic rock, "bluesadelic"); Aug. 21, BC Combo (blues); Aug. 28, Coal County Express (bluegrass); and Sept. 4, Fred Douglas (oldies).For more information, call the chamber at 570-668-1880 or email

Ed Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service Sunday in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley.An indoor family picnic will be held following the service. Participants are reminded to bring a covered dish for sharing.Also on Sunday, the Auburn Camp meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Third Street in Auburn.An hour of praise and prayer is held at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.The Pickering Family Singers will perform at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle, 614 Valley Road.On July 9, an hour of praise and worship will be held at 7 p.m. at the tabernacle.
