Panther Valley seniors honored by Lions Club
Two Panther Valley High School seniors have been recognized by the Summit Hill Lions Club.
Jake Szczecina, son of Jeff and Maria Szczecina, and Len Ogozalek, son of Len and Lisa Ogozalek, received service awards in the amount of $250 each during a meeting of the club held May 26 at the Parkview Inn, Summit Hill.Club co-presidents Judy Midas and Tom Ponting made the presentations.Midas said the awards, which are made on an annual basis to a senior from Panther Valley and Marian high schools from Summit Hill, are "for service, rather than academics, in conjunction with our motto 'we serve.'"Since no Marian student applied for the award, which also required the student to submit a 100-word essay on volunteering, the club members decided this year to present both awards to a Panther Valley graduate.Szczecina is the salutatorian of the Class of 2014 and will be attending Misericordia University in the fall to pursue a physical therapy major. At Panther Valley, he is the vice president of the National Honor Society, a member of Student Forum, serves as the Panther Valley School Board student representative, and has played on the Panthers' basketball and baseball teams for four years.Out of school, he is a sacristan and altar server for St. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, a student assistant at the Carbon County Senior Games, and a camp adviser for the local summer basketball program.Szczecina plays baseball for the Black Diamond Senior Babe Ruth and basketball in the Panther Valley Summer Basketball League.
