Bears' Sabovic scores for LVC/MVC

WHITEHALL, Pa.The high school soccer season may have come to an end months ago, but there was an opportunity for a select number of seniors to showcase their talents one last time.

The 33rd Annual Lions All-Star Soccer Classic was held on Sunday at Whitehall High School's Zephyr Sports Complex, and 15 TIMES NEWS area players culminated their high school careers. In the first game of the day, Pleasant Valley's Ema Sabovic scored a goal in the 13th minute to give the Lehigh Valley Conference and Mountain Valley Conference girls a 1-0 lead early. The LVC/MVC team added two more goals to secure the 3-1 victory. The second game produced a bit of a different storyline as the Colonial League boys pulled away in the second half for a 6-3 victory over the MVC/LVC boys.GirlsWhile the LVC/MVC girls displayed their superiority over the Colonial League's team, at least for one day, the game went beyond the final score. It gave the players an opportunity to fight for one another on the field, rather than looking at each other as opponents, which they did for the entire high school campaign."We knew of each other, we just didn't know each other," said Sabovic, who will continue her soccer career at Wilkes University. "So then playing with each other, instead of against each other, was different and kind of cool."Saucon Valley's Alicia Binn tied the game at a goal a piece a little over two minutes after Sabovic's score. But two goals by Amanda McCarthy of Emmausincluding one in the final five minutesput the LVC/MVC girls ahead for good."I wanted to go out with a bang," Sabovic said. "I wanted to leave it all out there because I was playing with a couple girls that I wouldn't be playing with ever again, and we've been playing together since we were like 10."Joining Sabovic on the LVC/MVC girls' team were her Pleasant Valley teammates Victoria Weismeth, Gabrielle Lucchese and Dana McAllister, who was named a scholarship winner for her community service contributions."I think it was based a lot on community service, which is awesome that they can mix together community service and athletics," said McAllister, who will play soccer at Stevens Institute of Technology. "I think it's important for athletes not to only focus on athletics, but also help other people in the community and things as well."Northwestern's Trista Cunningham, Grace Baker and Caity Harris were named to the Colonial League squad.Offensive and defensive Most Valuable Players were named for both sides. McCarthy was named Offensive MVP for LVC/MVC, while East Stroudsburg South's Kelsey Finn was named Defensive MVP. Notre Dame East Stroudsburg's Angelica Bertola was the Offensive MVP, and Saucon Valley's Victoria Young was Defensive MVP for the Colonial League. Marisa Iannelli also received a scholarship for her community service."It's really fun to play against and with the best players in the area," McAllister said. "It's definitely humbling and cool to be around it. Everyone makes each other feel comfortable. It's nice to play as a team with kids you usually don't get to play with."BoysDespite goals by Parkland's Belal Mohamed and Northampton's Sam Gaye to erase a 2-0 deficit in the first half and tie it at intermission, the Colonial League boys flexed their muscles in the final 40 minutes. The Colonial League got plenty of contribution across their lineup. Four different players scored in the second half for the boys in gold, including Bangor's Matthew Palmer's goal with 3:50 remaining, to propel them to a 6-3 win.Pleasant Valley's Hako Beskovic, Brandon Percey and Connor Phillips, and Lehigton's combination of James Farano and Anthony Rossino were named to the LVC/MVC team. Northwestern's Brandon Etl, Kyle Willis and Matthew Strickland rounded out the All-Star selections for the Colonial League. The Offensive MVP for LVC/MVC was Northampton's Sam Gaye, who scored two goals, while Parkland's Kyle Stengel earned Defensive MVP honors. Notre Dame Green Pond's Gio Mowrey was named offensive MVP, and Southern Lehigh's Matthew Dicker was the defensive MVP for Colonial League.
