Wilson ends Lehighton's season

EASTON, PA - Take a glance at the Lehighton softball roster, and you won't see any seniors in the Indians' starting lineup. In fact the Indians have just three juniors and a freshman that start regularly, with the rest being sophomores.

And while the young and talented Indians have put together one of the better seasons in recent school history, perhaps that youth was seen in a different light during the team's District XI Class AAA quarterfinals matchup against Wilson over the weekend. After being held scoreless for the first two innings, the Warriors scored 10 runs over the next three frames and added one more in the sixth to put in effect the 10-run rule. In large part to seven Indian errors, the Warriors were able to secure the 11-1 victory on Saturday at Williams Township's John Kushnerick Field."They hit the ball well, and they put it in gaps," head coach Greg Poremba said. "We hit the ball hard early, but right to people."We gave them more outs then necessary."Starting pitcher Autumn Bickert had allowed four hits in the first two innings, and despite the first of the Indians' errors coming in the second, she managed to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard. When the bottom of the third got underway, however, that's when the Warriors' bats really started to make the Indians pay for their miscues. And once the offensive barrage started, it didn't stop.Infield hits for Kendra Showalter and Meredith Campbell to start the third gave the Warriors runners on first and second with no outs. Two batters later, Hannah Calantoni lined a single to center that scored Showalter; on a throwing error from the outfield, Campbell would advance to third and Calantoni moved to second. The next pitch from Bickert saw Tawny Handelongwho was 3-for-4 with three RBIsconnected on a two-run single to make it a 3-0 advantage. Two infield errors and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth. The Warriors' starting pitcher, Madison Oren, added some insurance runs for herself to work with on the mound. Her two-run double scored Devyn Losco and Showalter to make it 5-0. Handelong and Breanna Youngwho had four hits and three RBIsended the inning with RBI-hits.The Indians were also faced with a number of injuries to a few of their key playersSophia Everett and Kelsey Andrewsthat only caused more of a concern as the game continued."Our starting shortstop and catcher had pretty significant back injuries," Poremba said. "Early on I had to pull the shortstop [Everett] because she was in a lot of pain and the catcher [Andrews] near the end. She tolerated as much as she could."The Indians would then connect on one of two Warrior errors. In the top of the fifth, after Jill Guzenski reached base on an error, Cammi Nalesnik's RBI-double scored pinch-runner Hailey Steigerwalt. When the bottom half inning rolled around, two more Indian errors and three Warrior hits led to four more runs crossing home. Meredith Campbell's RBI-single in the sixth scored Showalter and officially ended the game. While the season came to an end in disappointing fashion, there is still much that Poremba was pleased with. This was the first time the Indians made leagues and district in the same season. And the future only looks brighter moving forward."Obviously when you make league playoffs and you make district playoffs, you did something right," Poremba said. "There's a lot to be excited about for them coming back. We are coming into a new league, and there are some good teams in that new league. There's no doubt about that."Lehighton 000 010 x - 1 2 7Wilson 003 431 x - 11 17 2Bickert, Binyon (3) and Andrews, Hunsicker (5); Oren and Losco; W - Oren. L - Bickert.
