The Tamaqua Tulip House

According to the property owners, only a few days remain to catch a glimpse of Tamaqua's top springtime tourist attraction.

The spectacular display of nature's colors and textures is once again drawing visitors to the community's North Ward section for a glimpse of the botanical wizardry of John "Wes" and Doris Kehlor, 405 N. Lehigh St."It's really at its peak right now," said Doris Kehlor late last week."But it could last another week." There still may be a few days left to see the spectacle.Known as the Tamaqua Tulip House, the Kehlor home is generally regarded as the town's number one tourist attraction for two weeks every year, showcasing several thousand tulips meticulously arranged and accompanied by complementary flowers and plants. This year's palette is pink and white, similar to last year's colors but totally different in design. In fact, Kehlor digs out the bulbs each fall and plants news ones so that each springtime brings a fresh display."I map it out. It's different each year," says Kehlor, a retired schoolteacher. John is retired from the former Atlas Powder Co./ICI Americas Inc.The display is a tribute to the love and devotion of the couple. The tulip symphony features a study in pink and white, but contrasted against a subtlety of other hues, such borders created by pale blue pansies and violas.Adding texture and interest are 27 impatiens baskets, more than 40 hydrangea pots tinted with a next-to-impossible-to-find pale shade of pink.Other flowering delights are begonias, daisies, geraniums, petunias, verbena, sweet alyssum, millionbells, azaleas and many others. With springtime kicking into high gear, the home has been attracting photographers and admirers since last week, drawing onlookers from the Lehigh Valley and beyond. Many say the brick Cape Cod-style home reminds them of an enchanted fairyland house from childhood fables. The Kehlor home has been featured in national publications including "Good Housekeeping" and "Country Garden," and was the site of a Schuylkill County formal garden tour several years ago.The Allentown Garden Club and other similar organizations have sponsored trips to see the colorful display.

Six thousand colorful tulips surround the Tamaqua home of John and Doris Kehlor, 405 N. Lehigh St., a perennial tourist attraction.
