'Grateful' for 16 years

Friday night, Dark Star Orchestra makes a return visit to Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe.

They keep coming back because they draw very well at the local area's largest venue.Dark Star's shows are built off the extensive catalog of the Grateful Dead. On any given night the band will perform a show based on a set list from the Grateful Dead's 30 years of extensive touring or use the catalog of original songs and often played covers to create a unique set list for the show. This allows music fans both young and old to share in the experience.Dark Star Orchestra offers a continually evolving artistic outlet within the Grateful Dead's musical canon. Matching equipment, stage layout and even members (various eras included female vocals or multiple drummers), Dark Star Orchestra's determined commitment to 'raising the Dead' has earned them high praise.Numerous guest musicians have sat in with Dark Star Orchestra, including Phish's Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman, Steve Kimock, Peter Rowan, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Keller Williams, Government Mule's Warren Haynes and every living member of the original Grateful Dead."Playing with Dark Star Orchestra feels just exactly like it felt when I was playing with the Grateful Dead," said Donna Jean Godchaux, Grateful Dead vocalist and frequent DSO guest."I can close my eyes and go back 30 years and have it be every bit as rewarding and satisfying," remarked Dan Healy, Grateful Dead sound engineer 1966 -1994, who toured as DSO's sound engineer in 2008.While re-creating set lists song for song, Dark Star Orchestra does not try to match Grateful Dead songs note for note, claiming anything so formulaic would be of a great disservice to the free spirit of The Dead's live performances. On another note, Penn's Peak popular deck parties will be held throughout the summer. Here's the deck party schedule:Deck Parties• May 29 Becky and the Beasts, 6:30-9 p.m.• June 5 Olde Friends, 6:30-9 p.m.• June 12 Ric Toole Band, 6:30-9 p.m.• June 19 Billy Bauer Band, 6:30-9 p.m.• July 3 Becky and the Beass, 6:30-9 p.m.• July 6 Coal County Express, 2-5 p.m.• July 10 Who Knows Band, 6:30-9 p.m.• July 12 Nightwind, 6:30- 9 p.m.• July 17 Craig Thatcher Band, 6:30-9 p.m.• July 20 High Strung, 2-5 p.m.• July 25 Large Flowerheads, 6:30-9 p.m.• Aug. 2 Daisy Jug Band, 6:30-9 p.m.• Aug. 3 Jigsaw Johnny, 2-5 p.m.• Aug. 7 Ostrich Hat, 6:30-9 p.m.• Aug. 10 Shellshocked Churchills, 2-5 p.m.• Aug. 14 Craig Thatcher Band, 6:30-9 p.m.• Aug. 28 Jake Kaligis New Constitution, 6:30-9 p.m.The concert schedule for Penn's Peak is as follows:ConcertsMay• 30 Dark Star Orchestra, 8 p.m. Tickets $24 advance, $29 day of show.June• 6 Pablo Cruise, 8 p.m. Tickets $23 advance, $28 day of show.• 7 Ryan Pelton, 8 p.m. Tickets $22 advance, $27 day of show.• 13 Live Wire with Exciter, Judas Priest Tribute Show, 8 p.m. Tickets $17 advance, $22 day of show.• 20 REO Speedwagon, 8 p.m. Tickets $35 advance, $40 day of show.• 26 Happy Together Tour 2014, 8 p.m. Tickets $39 reserved, $44 premium reserved.• 27 Jamey Johnson, 8 p.m. Tickets $32 regular reserved seating, $37 Pit (standing room only).• 28 7 Bridges with Clyde Barrow and the Legendary Barbusters, 8 p.m. Tickets $18 advance, $23 day of show.July• 18 B.B.
