Hunger walk

The Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network will sponsor a "Hunger Walk" this Sunday in an effort to help local families in need.The walk will be the culmination of Hunger Weekend, when organizations, businesses, church groups and individuals will be collecting food and funds to benefit the food banks at the Tamaqua Salvation Army and Trinity United Church of Christ.The walk will begin and end at the Tamaqua Family Practice parking lot on South Railroad Street.Several participants have already begun efforts to collect items, such as Zion Lutheran Church and the St. Vincent dePaul Society of St. Jerome's Catholic Church. Members of St. John's Lutheran Church are selling shoe cutouts in support of the walk and the Tamaqua Rotary Club collected canned goods in front of Boyer's Food Market on May 10.Several collection centers for nonperishable foods have also been established, and include Tamaqua YMCA, Tamaqua Library and the Tamaqua Art Center.For more information call 570-668-0289 or visit

Broad St., Tamaqua, will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school for all ages will be held at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, an evening service and Bible study session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will include the final segment of the five-week study led by Andrew Gerber.The Lewistown Valley Bible Vacation School will be held from 6 to 8:15 p.m. from June 9 through June 13 at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle.
