Relay for Life set in Slatington

Cancer never sleeps.

That sad, yet true, fact of life is enough to provide the impetus behind the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Upper Lehigh County. The event will be held from 4 p.m. Friday through 4 p.m. Saturday at Northern Lehigh High School's Bulldog Community Stadium, 1 Bulldog Lane, Slatington. It will kick off with an opening ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday. The survivors ceremony will be held at 7 p.m., followed by the luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. The fight back ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday with the closing ceremony at 4 p.m.Cheryl Haas, Relay For Life specialist, said there are 13 teams and 69 participants who plan to take part in the 24-hour event, which had previously been known as Relay For Life of Schnecksville, which had been held at the Schnecksville Fairgrounds."We're very thankful to (the Northern Lehigh area), and especially Mr. (Bob) Vlasaty, who has been extremely accommodating and on board, as well as the high school's Leo Club, Northern Lehigh softball, which has a team, and the Northern Lehigh junior class has a team," Haas said. "That's what it's about; getting the youth involved, the young adults, because they are the future of Relay."Haas added, "We celebrate our survivors, remember our loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease that has taken too much from too many."Relay For Life is a 24-hour community event that raises awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society to support cancer research and provide free programs and services to cancer survivors. It consists of an organized, overnight community fundraising walk, whereby teams of people camp out around a track while members of each team take turns walking around the track. It also features food, games and activities to provide entertainment and build camaraderie as part of a family-friendly environment for the entire community.Relay For Life is designed to involve the community in cancer education, increase awareness of the mission of the American Cancer Society and its advocacy efforts, and to learn about programs and services available to cancer patients, their caregivers and families. For more information:
