'Casting for Recovery' fly fishing program
The Brodhead Chapter of Trout Unlimited is continuing with its ongoing series of programs to educate the general public through a wide array of programs relating to the area's environmental conservation issues, as well as to provide information to enhance the social values of the local community.
The organization is teaming up with the NE Chapter of Casting for Recovery to present Marsha Benovengo, Eastern Pennsylvania CFR program coordinator, who will be the guest speaker at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, at the Pocono Medical Center's Hughes Cancer Center second floor serenity/tranquility room.Casting for Recovery is a program designed to enhance the quality of life of women who have survived breast cancer by providing retreats designed to promote and support mental and physical healing through fly fishing.It utilizes counseling, medical education and instruction in fly fishing to provide an opportunity for women at any age, or stage of treatment or recovery, to address survivorship issues.Casting for Recovery is committed to socioeconomic and cultural diversity, and its fly fishing retreats are provided at no cost to participants.The Casting for Recovery program, which was founded in 1996 by a breast cancer reconstructive surgeon and a professional fly fisher, has garnered endorsements from medical and psychosocial experts for its innovative healing program model and has received extensive national media coverage.Casting for Recovery, knowing that survivors may have few resources to address the medical and emotional issues they face, focuses on recovery, offering healing retreats that provide powerful tools to help women live full lives after a breast cancer diagnosis.There is no cost to participants other than the expenses involved in traveling to and from the retreat location.For more information about this program and the upcoming retreat at Skytop Lodge Sept. 7-9, contact BTU chapter President Tom Battista at 570-236-1734 or go to
