Allegedly has marijuana at police station

A man who came to the Mahoning Township police station to retrieve a vehicle from police impoundment allegedly possessed marijuana at the time.

Chief of Police Audie Mertz said on May 2, Julio Javier Malave-Echevarria of Allentown came to the police station to retrieve a vehicle.While at the police station a records check showed that his license was suspended. After the vehicle was released from impound to the owner, an officer observed Malave-Echevarria drive out of the police parking lot in the vehicle they had arrived in.The officer stopped the vehicle and while talking with Malave-Echevarria he detected an odor of marijuana. Malave-Echevarria was patted down, and a marijuana pipe was found in his pants pocket.An additional check showed he had summary traffic warrants.The vehicle was impounded, and Malave-Echevarria was arraigned on possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under suspension.He was arraigned by District Judge Casimir Kosciolek, where bail was set at $3,000 dollars.The vehicle that was being picked up from impound was the minivan involved in a police pursuit/retail theft at Walmart on April 25, 2014. In that incident officers arrested Manuel Rivera-Agosto, and Elias Cruz.
