Workers needed to assist Lions Club at Lehigh Canal Park

Members of the Beltzville Lions Club will be performing some much-needed upkeep at the Lehigh Canal Park at Lock 13, Parryville, from 5 to dark every Tuesday evening throughout the summer and early fall beginning on Tuesday, May 6.

Tom Zellner is coordinating the project. Zellner said a sinkhole that formed was filled in last week, but that more work is needed at the site.Ongoing projects include burning scrap wood and stumps left from last year to get rid of the brush, cutting weeds, and moving blocks to facilitate mowing grass.Volunteers are needed to help with week whacking, cutting brush and trees and picking up trash. People who would like to be involved in this project should contact Bob Maholick at 610-377-5559.Needed are a weed whacker, pruners, chain saw, trash bags, riding lawn mower, rakes, shovels, push mower, a chipper and possibly a set of waders."We'll be emptying trash barrels ongoing," said Zellner. "Also we need to start spraying herbicide to get rid of poison ivy."Members of the club made some progress on Saturday, when litter and brush were cleared from the site. Also a volunteer picked up litter along the towpath from Parryville to Weissport, with a member of the club clearing litter bags from the site."We're going to be doing the work on a Tuesday night because we have heard that people want to get involved but could not do so because they work during the day," said Bob Maholick. "It also works out better because the grass is usually wet in the morning."In the event of rain on Tuesday night, work days will be moved to Wednesday.
