Send in the clowns!
The Lehighton Recreational Center was transformed into the Big Top Friday during Blue Mountain Health System's 25th annual Children's Health Fair. This year's theme was "Here Comes the Circus."Preschool through second-grade students from Panther Valley, Weatherly, Shull-David and L.B. Morris Elementary schools learned about a variety of health topics through fun hands-on activities.Mary Lou McGeehan, community education coordinator at Blue Mountain Health System, said that the theme for the 25th anniversary was chosen from previous themes because the committee had a lot of fun putting it together. There were clowns, parties, a wheel spin and more for children to watch and learn everything from the body to smoking, animal safety, poisons, bullying, substance abuse, fitness, nutrition and more.McGeehan added that to make this annual event a success, Blue Mountain has partnered with area organizations and in-house departments to help teach the children about healthy habits.Participating agencies included BMHS Behavioral Health, Radiology, Nutritional Services, Lab, Physical Therapy, Black Lung, and Emergency Services; Pyramid Fitness Center; Carbon County Drug and Alcohol; Domestic Violence Services; AmeriHealth; Jim Thorpe Yoga; Penn State Master Gardeners; the Carbon County Sheriff's Office; Cancer Support Community of the Greater Lehigh Valley; and the office of state Rep. Doyle Heffley.
