There's probably no cover band which got the notoriety that Sha Na Na has achieved.

The band played in the movie "Grease," which was a box office hit and starred Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta.Sha Na Na also played at Woodstock. They had a weekly network TV show.Tonight, the group makes a return visit to Penn's Peak for a concert beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $27 at the door. The performance is a stop in Sha Na Na's 45th anniversary tour.Jocko Marcellino, an original member of Sha Na Na, said Woodstock was only the band's eighth gig. It was because of Jimi Hendrix that Sha Na Na even took the stage.According to Jocko, the promoter was behind schedule at Woodstock. Sha Na Na was supposed to play after Hendrix. Because of the scheduling problems, Sha Na Na was going to be skipped, but Hendrix spoke up for the band.Hendrix allowed Sha Na Na to play before he went on stage."I have a lot to thank Jimi Hendrix for," Jocko said.As if Woodstock didn't give Sha Na Na a lot of exposure, then came the movie "Grease" in 1972. Sha Na Na was asked to do the role of the movie band, Johnny Casino and the Gamblers. In the film they sang such notables as "Rock and Roll is Here to Stay," "Blue Moon," "Hound Dog," and "Tears on My Pillows."Jocko said they did six songs for the "Grease" soundtrack. For the anniversary tour, Sha Na Na is singing 12 songs during their concerts including duets. It's not all about "Grease." You'll be hearing a lot of other songs."I'm a big fan of Little Richard because of his rhythm and blues. I'm an Elvis fan. I like the doo wop as well," he noted. The concert will begin on an upbeat note with dance songs. "There was a great era of dancing," he said, noting Sha Na Na tries to recreate it.Among the dance numbers are "Peppermint Twist," "The Hand Jive," and "The Stroll."Jocko lives in San Diego, Calif. with his wife and son. His wife used to be in music publishing and is now retired. His son is finishing medical school.Although he loves performing, Jocko admits that traveling is no longer fun."Traveling is a challenge always," he said, "but the getting there, and doing the show is the greatest reward."The years of performing has given Jocko a lot of fond memories. He recalls a concert during a blizzard in Madison Square Garden, and although a couple of band members didn't make it, there was a capacity crowd. He had invited a musician friend to sit in the audience. The friend was put into service and played the show.Jocko said, "Playing in Hong Kong was interesting."At a concert in Palm Springs, the venue was turned into a 50s theater. One of his favorites was a "Grease" sing-a-long at the Hollywood Bowl.Jocko said he's looking forward to returning to Penn's Peak, which he termed, "a cozy cabin on the hill."
