An original wood-built Chesapeake Bay crabbing boat has docked in Little Gap Square.
Located just outside the Covered Bridge Inn, the "Money Pit" is right at home, according to owner Ron Gilbert."It is an appropriate home for the boat since the Inn is known for its fresh fish, crabs, oysters and an array of other fresh seafood," Gilbert said. "The crabbing boat will be converted into an outdoor bar and dining area surrounded by the existing deck outside the newly occupied kitchen and Pizza To Go pickup counter."Gilbert said the 43-foot Masten handcrafted boat was built in the 1940s in Chestertown, Md.Gilbert noted at the time there was a large pickle factory in Chestertown, and the boat was constructed using wood from the pickle barrels.Upon its completion, the boat was used to run moonshine up the Chester River from the Chesapeake Bay, Gilbert said.Later, he said it became a crabbing boat, sailing daily out into the bay collecting Maryland Blue shell crabs.Back in its day, Gilbert said it wasn't uncommon for the "Money Pit" to return with 60-70 bushels of crabs. In the later years of its sail worthiness, the boat was used by a marina owner to take evening happy hour cruises on the Chesapeake Bay to enjoy the sunset while partaking of food and beverages. He said the "Money Pit" will again entertain guests at the Covered Bridge Inn who can enjoy evening cocktails and appetizers, before indulging in farm- and ocean-fresh table dining.
