Anglers streamed to the annual Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce Fishing Derby on Saturday, lured by the chance to hook a trout, and possibly big prizes.
Chamber member Tom Banditelli, who organizes the derby, said that the trout are purchased from S & A Trout Ponds, Orwigsburg, by Trout Unlimited. Some of the trout are tagged, with the tag number linked to a prize, such as free fuel or food, and even a fishing trip to Canada.Banditelli donates the trip to Caiger's, a lodge he owns on the St. Lawrence River. The river is four miles wide, and anglers can catch walleye, bass, pike and muskies, he said. But on Saturday, the focus was on trout. Volunteers stocked the Little Schuylkill just north of Tamaqua at noon. The derby runs for two months, and anglers can register through the Tamaqua Chamber or Tom's Auto & Marine, Tamaqua. During that time, Trout Unlimited volunteers will stock the river periodically.Area sponsors include M & S Hardware, Hess Gas, Caiger's, Tom's Auto & Marine, Fegley Oil, Sweet Treats, Hope's Collision and Towing, The Law Office of Gary Marchalk, and Rottet Motors.
