Rare vault no longer for sale in Lansford
A historic Victorian vault, which sits in the corner of the Lansford borough hall is no longer being considered for sale.
Earlier this month some council members indicated that the combination safe, built in 1884, should be sold because of it potentially rusting and failing to find a place to keep it.At last week's meeting of Lansford Borough Council, the board voted unanimously to keep the safe after hearing appeals by two members of the Lansford Historical Society. The discussion began when someone in the audience asked, "What do you want for the safe?""I don't feel we should get rid of it at all," said Mary Soberick, a council member.Bob Perrin of Coaldale, who is on the Lansford Historical Society, asked the council to keep the safe, saying, "I feel that is saving our history."He added, "It is our safe, Lansford's safe. It doesn't have to be sold.""That's part of our history," Perrin told council. "History is what's going to save our town."Council member Rose Mary Cannon said an article on the safe was placed in the newspaper to generate interest and see if it might be worth selling."We've had inquiries," she said. There were suggestions of moving the safe to another location in the borough, such as the No. 9 Mine Museum or the Historical Society office, but Soberick said she feels it should be kept in the borough hall.Historical Society member Bill Harleman said, "We want to preserve it. We don't want it leaving the borough. If it sits in the borough hall, the Historical Society is happy with that. We just don't want to lose it."Cannon made a motion, seconded by Tommy Vadyak, to have an engineer make an inspection to determine if the floor of the borough hall is strong enough for the safe."I'm opposed to getting rid of it," Vadyak said.Vadyak also made the motion "that the safe is not for sale."The wheeled one-ton safe was manufactured by the world-renowned York Safe & Lock Company. The safe features hidden compartments and interior lockable drawers. One drawer remains locked. The borough is without keys and unable to open it.The safe features two mountain and lake scenes hand-painted in oil in addition to lavish, hand-done embellishments and gold leaf trim.
