The program, called Tails for Troops, initially rescues dogs, then provides the dogs with professional training to be companions to veterans with PTSD.AMVETS Post One has donated $2,500 to the program. In addition, another $900 has been donated by the post in memory of Past Commander Richard Jacobs of Lake Hauto. Two other veterans organizations have joined with Post One. Freeland American Legion Post 173 has donated $1,000, and McAdoo VFW Post 6708 has donated $700.The donations will permit two companion dogs to be rescued and professionally trained."This program has been very successful," said Bill Gaddes, AMVETS Post One finance officer."These dogs, having been placed in pounds and in jeopardy themselves, seem to bond in a very unique way with our young warriors suffering from PTSD. Who knows? Such a companion dog may have averted the second tragedy at Fort Hood, Texas."Those wishing to support Marywood's Tails for Troops program may send donations to: Finance Officer, AMVETS Post One, c/o VFW Post 6708, 16 S. Kennedy Drive, McAdoo, PA 18237.
