Schuylkill man riding bike struck by car, in critical condition

An elderly Schuylkill County man was struck by a car while riding a bicycle on Thursday afternoon and is in critical condition in a Lehigh Valley area hospital.

State police at Frackville identified the victim as Ralph Werner, 73, of New Ringgold.Troopers said Werner was riding his bike southbound on Route 895 (Summer Valley Road), at East Rausch Road, in East Brunswick Township, about 4:19 p.m. when he attempted to make a left turn onto East Rausch Road without signaling.As Werner turned he entered the path of a 1999 Ford Taurus operated by Manuela Estrada, 19, of Lancaster. The front of the car struck the rear of the bike causing Werner to strike the hood of the Taurus. Both the car and bike came to rest in the southbound lane.Werner was flown by helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, where he was admitted and listed in critical condition. Estrada was not injured.Troopers were assisted at the scene by a Pottsville ALS unit and volunteers from the New Ringgold Fire Company.The investigation into the crash is continuing.
