Tamaqua driver, 3 others cited

A Tamaqua man has been cited following a traffic stop in the borough on April 13.

An officer was on patrol at 4:06 a.m. when he saw a blue Lincoln sedan traveling at a high rate of speed, heading east on Spruce Street. The car made a left turn on to Center Street and the officer noticed something hanging from the undercarriage.The officer turned on his lights and the Lincoln's driver pulled into the lot at Fegley's Mini Mart. The car came to an abrupt stop and the driver attempted to get out of his car, but was unable to keep his balance.The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol and asked the driver, Michael A. Mattox, 21, of 304 Cottage Ave., to perform field sobriety tests, which he failed.A preliminary breath test registered a positive reading of 0.21 percent, almost three times the legal limit of 0.08.Mattox was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Three passengers in the vehicle were charged with underage drinking, including two 16-year-old Tamaqua girls and 20-year-old Joseph J. Hargett of Lansford.
