State police at Fern Ridge are investigating a burglary and theft.

The break-in occurred at the residence of Irene Kociuba, 90, of 1166 Green Mount Drive in Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County. Unknown criminals forcibly entered the home about 3:30 a.m. on Thursday through the basement door. Once inside they cut copper piping from the basement and then attempted to gain access to the main floor.At this point the criminals fled out the basement door when they possibly heard the homeowner waking up.Kim C. Ernsberger, of Reeders, reported that unknown criminals stole about $70 worth of mulch from a site at HJP Park, in Jackson Township, Monroe County. Troopers said a dark-colored van was observed parked next to the mulch before the theft. The incident was reported at 11:25 a.m. on Sunday.Anyone with information concerning either incident is asked to call troopers at 570-646-2271.
