Borough concerned as bridge prep begins in Weissport

Weissport is asking the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to refrain from using a vibratory compactor when workers resurface Bridge Street in anticipation of the McCall bridge detour.

"We're worried about broken lines," said council member Brenda Leiby. She said she spoke recently with project manager Calvin Ulshafer, who told her that if Weissport is concerned about water lines or gas lines, officials need to send an email asking PennDOT not to use the tool, which would compact the ground but could break pipes. She said that Ulshafer is aware that gas, water and sewer lines lie beneath Bridge Street, and if such equipment is used, it could break the pipes. The vibratory compactor has a large vibrating baseplate and is suited for creating a level grade."All he wants is an email saying we don't want the compactor used on Bridge Street," she said.Council told secretary Jillyan Sterling to send an email to Ulshafer advising him that the borough doesn't want the vibrator compactor used on Bridge Street.PennDOT plans to begin milling and repaving Bridge Street, Canal Street and Route 209 in anticipation of the detour. The milling is scheduled to begin today.Council President Gene Kershner said the detour will begin on June 6 and school will not be over until June 16, which means that school buses will be affected by the detour.Temporary traffic patterns in Weissport and surrounding the bridge are expected to last three to four months.During that time, Weissport traffic on Bridge Street will be one way for the entire two lanes.PennDOT will install temporary traffic lights at the intersection of Bankway and Bridge Street at the Lehighton end of the Weissport/Lehighton bridge to help with traffic flow.Kershner said that PennDOT has contracted with the sock factory to allow workers to use the parking lot for supplies.Council member Arland Moyer said the contractors are not cleaning up Weissport of any of the concrete that has fallen off the bridge during the milling that is going on."There are piles of concrete all over the place," Moyer said.Council member Sue Pywar said that she has been picking up a lot of litter in the area where the bridge workers are parking."I picked up four water bottles alone yesterday," Pywar said.Resident Lynette Moyer also reported seeing nonresidents putting out trash for pickup.Leiby then said that council should consider setting up a spring cleanup and bring in a dumpster so that larger items could be picked up."I realize our present hauler doesn't pick up larger items," she said. "We need to do something to help our residents."Council also noted that there is a vacancy on the municipal authority.Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m.To leave a message, call the Borough office at 610-377-5606.

John Bush of Flagger Force directs traffic at the railroad crossing in Weissport during the reconstruction of Bridge Street today. Bush said that Flagger Force was contracted by J.D. Eckman to provide flagging services.
