Tamaqua man jailed on attempted homicide count

A Tamaqua man charged Sunday with criminal attempted homicide and related counts following an incident that occurred Saturday evening.

State police at Frackville said John Edwin Clause, 58, was arraigned Sunday morning on charges of criminal attempt homicide, aggravated and simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.He was arraigned before on-call District Judge James Reiley of Pottsville and taken to the county after failing to post $75,000 straight cash bail.Trooper Edward Lizewski said about 7:50 p.m. on Saturday Clause went to the home of Mark Scheitrum, 27, of 114 Reynolds Road, in Walker Township.The two got into a verbal argument that escalated to a physical confrontation. According to police, Clause entered Scheitrum's home and found him in the bathroom area. As the two argued Scheitrum allegedly struck Clause.At that point Clause pulled a handgun from a holster he was wearing and the two struggled. The weapon discharged hitting Scheitrum in the face, which Lizewski said caused a life-threatening injury.Scheitrum managed to flee the home. He was later found by a neighbor who called for medical assistance. Scheitrum was flown to the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township.Clause left the scene and returned to his home. He reportedly called Scheitrum's father and told him he had shot his son.Lizewski, according to his report, interviewed Clause at his home early Sunday morning. The trooper said Clause admitted going to Scheitrum's home and an argument started during which the weapon went off, striking Schuetrum.The investigation into the incident is continuing.
