Car into canal in Weissport

A car was found in the middle of the Lehigh Canal in Weissport early this morning.

Police, ambulance personnel, and firefighters responded. The Lehighton Fire Department and its water rescue unit were on scene.

Frank Lorah, a Franklin Township police officer, said the car was in the middle of the canal, in about three feet of water.

No one was in the car, which was registered to someone in West Chester. The owner was not located.

According to scanner reports, when police called the residence where the car was registered, the woman who answered said the car was her son’s and she had no idea why he was in this area.

A tow truck from Frank’s Towing in Franklin Township pulled the vehicle from the canal.

The car did not appear to have too much damage.
