PPL to accommodate anglers with Lake Wallenpaupack generation
As part of PPL's support of public recreation around 5,700-acre Lake Wallenpaupack, the company will manage power generation at the hydroelectric plant to accommodate springtime fishing on the Lackawaxen River.
"For the safety of anglers and as part of our federal operating license, we will suspend generation on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays starting April 12 the first day of trout season through June 14, and also on Fridays during that period for the three hours before and one hour after sunset," PPL's community relations director for the Pocono Region Paul Canevari said. "We want people to be safe and enjoy their experience fishing on the Lackawaxen, which is well-known for its population of wild brown and rainbow trout."Working with Trout Unlimited and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, we're pleased to do our part to make the Lackawaxen River safe and accessible. This schedule would be altered only if the power plant is needed to control lake elevation during heavy inflows or drought conditions, for emergency power generation or to regulate the water temperature in the Lackawaxen River."PPL has a program that manages power generation from PPL's Lake Wallenpaupack hydroelectric plant from spring through September to help keep water temperature downstream of the plant, between river miles 10 and 4, below 75 degrees. Cooler water provides a more beneficial habitat for wild trout as well as the trout stocked by the commission.*****This year's Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce Trout Derby, which is being held with the cooperation of Schuylkill County Trout Unlimited Stocking Association, begins Saturday, April 19, and tagged fish can be redeemed for two months, ending Saturday, June 14.Preregistration is required and forms are available at Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce office and Tom's Auto and Marine, Tamaqua.
