Northwestern sweeps Bulldogs

Entering the 2014 track and field season, there was little doubt that Northwestern Lehigh would once again have a strong program.

The girls were coming off a Colonial League championship, while the boys featured a squad that had only two losses last season. After several weather-related delays and postponements, the Tigers showed why expectations are justifiably high for both teams this year.Northwestern didn't show much rust in its first meet of the season, picking up a Colonial League sweep of Northern Lehigh, with the boys claiming a 125-25 victory and the girls winning by a 115-34 margin."I had faith in the kids, but I didn't really know what to expect," said first-year Northwestern coach Tim Cunningham. "With the winter the way it was and the weather the way that it was, I was really caught off guard with what I should be expecting."We have some new (athletes) that came out this year and some people that are looking to prove themselves. I think we now have a good assessment of where we stand as a team."Do they ever.Northwestern had several multiple event winners on both sides, and many of the names looked familiar from last year's squads.Haley Yost (1600, 800), Alexis Gawelko (100HH, high jump, 300H) and Trista Cunningham (long jump, discus, shot put) all picked up various individual event victories for the Lady Tigers (1-0), who were also able to sweep the 400, 1600 and 3200 meter relays. All was not lost for the Lady Bulldogs (2-2) on this day, however, as the team did get an impressive performance from Jessica Olewine, who won the triple jump, an event she was a state qualifier in last season, and tied the school record with a jump of 8'6" in the pole vault."I'm very happy with where I'm at in the pole vault," she said afterwards. "Last year, I was just looking to get 8'0". But in the last two meets, I've gone up two heights from where I was last season. I'm really happy with the progress I made from the beginning of the season."Northern Lehigh coach Mike Lehtonen had high praise for Olewine, who also took second in the long jump and third in the high jump."She's been doing really well all around right now in all of her events," he said. "We haven't had a lot of time outside because of the weather, so she hasn't been able to work on some of the technical stuff with the pole vault. But she's really adapted and made a lot of progress this season."Northern Lehigh's Erika McKay also had a strong showing, finishing second in the 1600 and third in the 3200.Much like the girls meet, the Northwestern (1-0) boys also had a number of noteworthy performances in their victory.Dylan Snyder (javelin, 300IH), Alex Partington (shot put, discus) and Cam Richardson (100, 200) all picked up multiple individual wins, and the Tigers again swept the 400, 1600 and 3200 relays.Despite the seemingly dominant performances from both teams, Cunningham knows he can't get complacent."My expectations are to just take it one meet at a time," the coach said. "From my past experience in the Lehigh Valley Conference (with Whitehall), I know that you can't overlook anybody."And I try to relay that message to the kids that we just have to take it one meet at a time. As long as they're doing their best and they keep improving, the wins will take care of themselves."Northern Lehigh's (3-1) standout performer was Gavin Kemery, who ran to dominant wins in the 1600 and 3200, respectively."I feel like I'm starting off pretty strong," said Kemery. "There's a lot to work on yet, but I just try to go out and run my best, and that's all I can do."And doing their best is all Lehtonen wants from his team as the season progresses."We're just going to keep trying to improve, both individually and as a team," the coach said. "Hopefully things come together as far as wins and losses are concerned. But all we ask is that they keep getting better each meet."BOYSNorthwestern 125, No. Lehigh 25100 - 1.
