Raiders rebound with win over PV

Rebuilding a team can often be frustrating.

Young and inexperienced players take their lumps on a team in a rebuilding stage, but in the end they gain valuable experience. In most cases, if they work hard, by the time their junior and senior seasons arrive, the team that once was in rebuilding mode will see success. That's exactly the case so far for the Tamaqua softball squad, who haven't qualified for the playoffs the past two seasons. The Raiders are off to a hot start this season (2-0) and showed some offensive firepower on Tuesday, knocking off Panther Valley, 15-0 in three innings.Tamaqua wasted no time getting things started from the plate. In fact, every single Raider player who came up to bat in the inning scored except for one, helping them get out to an 11-0 lead."We lost both our starting pitchers from last season, and this game is all about pitching," said Panther Valley coach Jim Hull. "So we're still trying to fine-tune that area right now. Obviously, we have some work to do in that department. We also have to get better defensively as well."Tamaqua scored three more runs in the second and a final game-ending run in the third. The Raiders' Shayna Dietrich had a very nice day at the plate. She came up with two hits, including a triple, leading her team with four RBIs."I've been playing with a lot of confidence this season, and that's the attitude I took with me to the plate today," Dietrich said. "We've all been playing with a lot of confidence and think that's why we're off to such a good start. We've all worked hard and we're ready to take that next step, which is to be a postseason team."Offense was key in the Raiders' 15-0 win, but so was pitcher Bailey Pedersen's effort from the circle. Pedersen let up just one hit and struck out four for Tamaqua on the afternoon."Bailey does an outstanding job for us," said Tamaqua coach Jill Barron. "That's what she does. She pitches year-round, and her hard work has put her in a position to be successful this year. I'm just excited with where we are right now. It was only our second time outside all year and the girls really reacted well out there. A good start is always a great way to build confidence, which we'll need as we head into the tougher part of our schedule."For Tamaqua, Carly Sassaman had two hits and two RBIs, while Taylor Fritz came up with a triple and two RBIs. Lynn Kistler also added two hits and two RBIs, while Hannah Perla, Bailey Hartung and Cailyn Joseph each added an RBI for Tamaqua as well.Jess Ba the day for Panther Valley (0-1)Panther Vy. 000 - 0 1 2Tamaqua (11)31 - 15 8 0Maturana, Mertz (2), and Rodriguez; Pedersen and Sassaman; W - Pedersen L - Maturana.
