Masonic Temple in Wilkes-Barre damaged by fire

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - A fire has damaged the historic Masonic Temple in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

Wilkes-Barre Fire Chief Jay Delaney said no one was in the four-story building by the time firefighters arrived shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Thick, black smoke poured from the broken windows firefighters smashed out on each floor to vent the heat and smoke.

The blaze was brought under control in about 30 minutes.

Delaney said the cause of the fire is still being investigated but it started on the first floor and spread to the floors above.

No injuries were reported. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.
