Man in jail after chase

A Tamaqua man sits in the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville after leading local police on a high-speed chase in the North Ward section of Tamaqua on Monday afternoon.

Police were dispatched to 114 Washington St., Tamaqua, shortly before 5 p.m. Monday for a reported domestic incident.According to the victim, John J. Roberts, 42, her estranged husband, assaulted her and was attempting to flee with their 8-year-old son.As patrolman Matthew Houser arrived, he saw a silver Toyota parked in front of the home. A man, later identified as Roberts, was sitting behind the steering wheel. A young boy in the back seat was hanging out of the window, yelling for help.Houser pulled in front of the Toyota, ordering Roberts to exit his vehicle. Instead, Roberts drove up on the sidewalk and turned onto a side street. Houser pursued him. The vehicles traveled on many of the side streets in the North Ward before Roberts pulled back in front of his house to allow his son to get out.Roberts then got out of the car, but refused Houser's orders to drop to the ground. Instead, he re-entered his vehicle and fled, turning right on to Lafayette Street.After many twists and turns, Roberts fled west on Route 209 into Schuylkill Township. Speeds reached in excess of 90 miles per hour.At one point, Roberts attempted to run into another Tamaqua Police cruiser, operated by patrolman Karl Harig.As Roberts drove along a running trail, he miscalculated and struck a tree. He then attempted to run away, but was brought to the ground by officers.He was arraigned before duty District Judge Christina Hale of Frackville, on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, fleeing and attempting to flee police, simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment, following too closely, driving on the wrong side of the road, driving at an unsafe speed, reckless driving and careless driving.Bail was set at $50,000, landing Roberts in the county jail.
