Morning ice provides perfect topper for wacky weather month

March has been one crazy month for weather patterns.

The month began like a lion like the old saying goes, with the polar vortex dipping down for a third time this winter, causing temperatures to drop below normal and wind chill values to plummet to subzero. But it also went out like a lion instead of a lamb as this past weekend was a washout with an icy ending.Over 2 inches of rain fell in the coverage area over the weekend, and on Sunday afternoon, as temperatures hovered near freezing, the precipitation changed over to sleet and freezing rain.As a result, driving conditions deteriorated; trees fell and power outages were reported.Interstate 80 westbound was shut down in the area of mile marker 277 at 6 p.m. Sunday for a crash due to icy road conditions.According to the PPL Electric website, a small section of Jim Thorpe was without power Sunday afternoon. Jim Thorpe police had no details regarding the outage this morning. In the area of LaRose's Roller Skating Rink along Route 209 in Lehighton, a tree fell in the roadway, requiring crews to remove it.Looking aheadApril is not looking much better when it comes to bringing the sun.Temperatures will rebound today through Friday, with highs near 60. But the first week of April is following the old saying "April Showers."According to the National Weather Service, there is a chance of rain Wednesday through Saturday.
