Penn Kidder seventh graders sponsor multicultural event

Thursday evening seventh grade geography students traveled the world without leaving Albrightsville.

Penn Kidder School held its 19th annual multicultural night, with about 100 students participating, each preparing an ethnic food and presentation for the event."It is our hope that by participating in events like this that our students come to understand that the world is bigger than Albrightsville," explained Amy Burkey a geography teacher at Penn Kidder.Burkey, along with Cara McDonald, who also teaches seventh grade geography, start the process in mid-January. A letter is sent out to parents explaining what is expected of each student. The students select the county, food and presentation and submit their ideas to the teachers for approval. Each student also provides a typed copy of their recipe and the teachers compile them into a cookbook. The cookbooks are sold during the event for $1each, with the monies raised going to a charity. This year the money will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.Parents, siblings and grandparents crowed into the gymnasium and cafeteria to sample the foods and drinks provided by the students."The world is ethnically diverse," says Burkey. "These students get an idea of what they will experience when they get out into the world."

Emily Ertle and Katelyn Avellanie studied Bolivia and made empanadas, flan and a traditional drink as well.
