Flames damage modular home, pickup truck in East Penn Twp.

A vehicle fire spread to a modular home, heavily damaging it, in East Penn Township on Tuesday evening.

The fire happened at the residence of Larry Griffith off Lauchnor Road..

Griffith, who lived alone, escaped without injury.

Fire Chief Cory Smith said a bed was being removed from a pick-up truck when sparks, possibly from a torch, somehow caused the gas tank of the truck to explode.

The truck was destroyed.

Smith said it appears the flames spread to the roof of the home.

The roof area sustained substantial damage.

The East Penn Fire Company was assisted by members of the Mahoning Valley, Bowmanstown, and Lehighton fire departments.

The house is located down a narrow, dirt road,  about three-quarters of a mile off Route 895.

Tank trucks were utilized to keep a steady water supply on the fire.

State police also assisted at the scene.

The Mahoning Valley Ambulance and Lehighton Ambulance responded.

Traffic and crowd control was handled by local fire police.
