Corbett orders flags to half-staff for Guarnere

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett has ordered that U.S. and state flags in Harrisburg and Philadelphia be lowered to half-staff in memory of William "Wild Bill" Guarnere, a World War II veteran whose story was dramatized in the TV miniseries "Band of Brothers."

The order Corbett issued Tuesday requires flags at the Capitol complex and state facilities in Philadelphia to remain lowered from sunrise to sundown on Friday.Guarnere was a south Philadelphia native who lived there until he died Saturday at the age of 90.The HBO miniseries followed Guarnere and fellow members of Easy Company — part of the 101st Airborne Division — through some of the war's most ferocious European battles. Guarnere lost a leg while trying to help a wounded soldier during the Battle of the Bulge.
