Cub Scouts racing to the finish line

Cub Pack 41 ... start your engines.

The pack recently held their annual Pine Wood Derby at the Holy Trinity Church in Palmerton.Nineteen Scouts, representing area Tiger, Wolf, Bears and Webelos 1 and Webelos 2 packs were present at the event to race their cars as family members cheered them on.Each boy, along with help from family members, built their car from a block of wood made of pine, four plastic wheels and nails. The Scout is able to carve and decorate the car to their own style. The car must not exceed a certain weight.Adults and family members are also allowed to build cars. These cars were raced just for the sport."Being a Scout helps teach citizenship, respect and the love of outdoors. It helps the kids to develop on their own. The Scouts are not only involved with summer activities like camping, they are also active in other sports," said Matthew Wentz, former Cubmaster and current Webelos leader. He is the father of two sons in Scouting and he became an Eagle Scout at age 18.A cake auction was also held in conjunction with the derby. Nine cakes were baked and decorated by the Scouts and their families. Each cake was sold with the proceeds going back into the pack.Special awards for best theme cakes went to: best Scouting theme, Dylan Kern; most patriotic and holiday/seasonal, Zander Shelly; most unusual, Gyan Boykin; Great Outdoors, Noah Bryfogle; Most Work Done by the Scout and Other Category went to Zachery and Joshua Reif.Bear Cub Scout, Eston Jones of Walnutport has been in Scouting for three years and enjoys it."Although he might not know it now, he is learning life lessons that he will use in the future," said Donna Jones, Eston's mother. His father, grandfather and his uncle are all Eagle Scouts.The cars entered into the derby were also judged by those attending for some special awards: fastest looking car, Cameron Behler; most vehicular, Dylan Kern; most original, Dave Hartranft; Scouts Award (car that looks most likely to be made by the Scout), Zander Shelly; People's Choice, Aden McCarty; and People's Choice Family Division went to Shawn Gardner.The top ten winners for the 2014 Pinewood derby were: first place was Arron Gardner; second, Dave Hartranft; third, CJ Kern; fourth, Dylan Kern; fifth, Noah Bollinger; sixth, Max Chickey; seventh, Gyan Boykin; eighth, Cameron Behler; ninth, Aden McCarty; 10th place, Dave Brokosky.The top five winners will go on to compete in the North Valley District Pine Wood Derby in a few weeks.Cubmaster and coordinator, Eric Reif summed up the event by saying, "It doesn't matter if you win or lose as long as we all had fun."He gave his thanks to all those who helped make the derby a success.Den Leaders for packs are: Tiger Cubs, Eric Reif; Wolf, Jason Behler; Bears, Eric Reif and Jim Engle; Webelos 1, Dave Gardner; Webelos 2, Lizzie Reif and Steph Mccarty.The Pinewood Derby has been drawing Cub Scouts together for a day of competition since 1953.
