Be patient with garbage collection in Lehighton

Lehighton borough residents should continue to hold tight: Your garbage will be collected.

After its regular meeting, borough council on Monday went into executive session to discuss the borough's current garbage contract.Borough manager Nicole Beckett said that no action stemmed from council's executive session, but added a meeting with the borough's current trash hauler, Advanced Disposal, will take place on Friday."This is the first time we've had any kind of issue," Beckett said. "It's been a bad winter; we're going to discuss what can be done better."Beckett said the borough's current contract with Advanced Disposal began in January 2013, and runs through January 2016. The borough also had its prior contract with the company, she said. The borough has fielded numerous complaints over garbage collection, which prompted it to distribute a message that explains the current state of garbage removal in the borough:"Lehighton Borough apologizes for the difficulties with the garbage removal for the past two weeks. We are doing everything in our power to have the garbage removed, and ask for your patience. This has been a very difficult winter, as we have been spoiled by the past few mild winters. We understand your concerns, and as residents ourselves, feel your frustration."The borough asks residents to place garbage on main streets when there is a large snowfall."We do understand this is an added inconvenience to the residents, but we also feel that we need to work for the good of everyone involved," the memo said.
