Preparation starts for Route 903 project

Equipment for the Route 903 bridge project in Jim Thorpe is starting to move in.

During the Carbon County Commissioners' meeting on Thursday, the board announced that the ticket booth for the parking lot has been moved and is in place on the right side of the lot entrance for the duration of the bridge project. The reason for the move is because the size of the equipment and materials being brought in for construction of the new bridge requires a larger turning radius than available with the booth's current location.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein explained that the new location may be an inconvenience for everyone because drivers must either lean over the passenger seat and hand payment to the parking attendant through the passenger window, or get out to pay.He asked that everyone be patient with this change because it was required by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for the project.Nothstein added that the booth's concrete pad, located in the center of the lot as soon as a driver enters, will remain during the project and urged people to take caution so they don't get hung up on the pad.Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard added that the pad is about four inches high and to help vehicles, the county is putting coal patch around the base of the pad to create a sort of bump instead of a curb.Nothstein said that so far, the equipment that contractor Allan A. Myers of Worcester has brought in has had no problem with the concrete pad.The commissioners also approved an agreement with Allan A. Myers for a trailer, laydown, staging and storage area on the county overflow parking area. The cost shall be $7,800 for the first year and $650 a month after that. There will be special provisions for anticipated high tourist events, such as the St. Patrick's Day parade weekend and every weekend in October. In other matters at Thursday's meeting, the board voted unanimously to authorize the necessary action to discontinue the county appeal of Mahoning Township's land development decision regarding the Packerton Yards Business Park. This was a second appeal filed by the county with regards to land use.The first appeal regarding constructing roads on the project was denied by the Commonwealth Court, so officials said that this appeal was not necessary. The commissioners also ratified a declaration of disaster emergency in the county for the crippling snow storm that hit on Feb. 13.
