Icy road blamed for 3-vehicle crash

An icy Route 61 in Schuylkill County was blamed for a three-vehicle crash that occurred about 8:47 a.m. Wednesday in West Brunswick Township. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the three vehicles involved were all northbound and that it was sleeting and freezing rain at the time.

Troopers said Luis E. Gonzalez, 30, of Morristown, N.J., was driving a 2007 Freightliner tractor with trailer in the left lane when he observed a crash ahead of him. He attempted to slow down and stop but was unable.His rig began to slide on the icy road with the trailer turning counter-clockwise. The right rear of the trailer impacted with the driver's side mirror of a 2003 Mazda Tribute operated by Kerry A. Kuhn, 55, of Oley, Berks County. The truck continued to slide after impact and struck the rear of 2010 Toyota Camry, driven by Michael J. Polash, 54, of Stewartstown, York County, causing it to spin clockwise 180 degrees.Polash was injured and taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. The other two drivers were not injured.The Toyota had to be towed from the scene. The two northbound lanes were closed for about two hours, troopers said.Gonzalez was cited for driving a vehicle at a (un) safe speed.
