Schuylkill retirement fund growing

Schuylkill County's retirement fund had some slow growth in recent years, but is now on an upward trajectory.

"By the end of January, we were down to $119 million. We bumped up to $121 million (as of Wednesday). It's been a bumpy ride this past month, but we're well-diversified in both equities and bond funds, and also alternatives. we have a good manager that keeps us in line," said Controller Christy D. Joy.That's just assets, however. The other factor in the retirement fund's health is liabilities."We're going to be getting an actuarial report in late spring, from the Hay Group, to see where our liabilities are. Last year, our liabilities were about $120 million. We're doing pretty well. I'm very interested in that actuarial report. I think we're doing better than we thought," he said. The county has about 500 retirees.
