A Tamaqua man was arrested Monday afternoon after he fled from police who attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

Officers on patrol at 2:52 p.m. saw a gray two door Volkswagen traveling south on Greenwood Street. The inspection sticker was partially scraped off. The driver saw police and stepped on the gas, sliding through a turn on to Hazle Street, then turned left on to Patterson Street, not bothering to stop for the stop sign.Officers lost sight of the car for a minute or two, but then found the car, abandoned, with the engine running, on East Cottage Avenue.By this time, additional officers had arrived, including from Rush Township, Schuylkill Township and Coaldale, and a search of the area began.After a few minutes, police located the driver, identified as Marc Tita, 33, of 212 Center St., Tamaqua.Charges are pending.
